This security measure prevents automated systems from scraping the data. Once past the CAPTCHA, you can search by name. Enter a last name and first name to find the person. The results show the booking number, current housing location, arrest date, arresting agency, booking date and location, bail amount, facility, and next court date. LA County Arrest Record Disclosure
California Government Code Section 7923.610 requires the LASD to make arrest information public. The required data includes the full name, occupation, physical description, date of birth, arrest and booking times, arrest location, circumstances, bail, and all charges. Los Angeles County meets this requirement through the online inmate search, booking log, and through its Records and ID Bureau. Given the sheer volume of arrests in LA County, the online tools are the most efficient way to access this data.
There are limits on what the LASD will share. The Records FAQ page explains that pursuant to California Government Code Section 6254(f), local police agency records of investigation are exempt from release. That means the LASD does not release crime reports, which contain the detailed investigation narrative. But the booking data itself, including the name, charges, and arrest details listed above, is public. The distinction matters. Booking information is always available. Investigation details are not.
Sealing LA County Arrest Records
People arrested in Los Angeles County who were not convicted have options for sealing their arrest records. Penal Code Section 851.87 allows a petition to the Los Angeles County Superior Court. If the court grants the petition, the arrest record gets sealed. The person can then legally state they were not arrested for that charge. This is a big deal in LA County, where the volume of arrests means many people have records from cases that never went anywhere.
Penal Code Section 851.8 covers factual innocence. This is different from Section 851.87. Under 851.8, a person who was arrested but determined to be factually innocent can petition to have the arrest record destroyed, not just sealed. The LASD Sealing Section at (562) 345-4454 handles both types of requests.
California also has automatic arrest record relief under Penal Code Section 851.93. The DOJ reviews records monthly and seals eligible arrests across the state, including those from Los Angeles County. No petition is needed. Eligible cases include misdemeanor arrests where charges were dismissed or where no case was filed within a year.
